The choices behind every scent—and why less can sometimes mean more.
Scents can make a product irresistible—and often when producing soap, choosing the right fragrance is a careful balance between experience, ethics, and sustainability.
Fragrance isn’t just about making soap smell good; it shapes emotions, memories, and even self-care rituals. But behind every fresh floral or citrus aroma, there’s a bigger conversation happening.
Artificial Fragrances: Convenience with Considerations
Many soaps use lab-created fragrances that mimic natural scents. They’re consistent, long-lasting, and widely available. But their formulas often include synthetic chemicals like phthalates, which help scents linger but have been linked to potential health concerns, including allergies and hormone disruption.
There’s also an environmental cost. Unlike essential oils, artificial fragrances don’t break down easily in water systems, and some compounds can accumulate in the environment over time.
Essential Oils: A Natural Alternative, with Limits
Derived from plants, essential oils offer more than just scent—they can have antibacterial and calming properties. But they aren’t without challenges. Producing essential oils requires a large amount of plant material, which can lead to overharvesting and ecological strain if not sourced responsibly.
That’s why many small-batch soap makers tread carefully, weighing the benefits of essential oils against the realities of sustainability. Ethical harvesting and responsible farming practices are key, but they require effort, transparency, and often higher costs.
So, What’s the Right Choice?

The truth is, there’s no one-size-fits-all answer. Some brands prioritize purity and avoid synthetic fragrances altogether. Others carefully source sustainable essential oils or use safer fragrance blends.
Even in “unscented” soaps, there’s usually a bit of scent work happening—subtle ingredients added to mask the smell of the raw materials. Nothing is truly scentless -even in our mild and unscented Castile soap. However, we’ve focused on keeping it neutral and gentle, so it smells clean and soft—without anything overpowering.
At Earthoskin, our goal is simple: to create products that are gentle on the skin and mindful of the planet. For consumers, awareness is the first step. Whether you choose essential oils, fragrance-free options, or responsibly crafted blends, knowing what’s behind the scent helps you make an informed decision—one that feels right for you.
We believe in using natural ingredients that are safe for the skin (sensitive or not) and environment. Our choice to use essential oils isn’t just about fragrance—it’s about harnessing nature’s benefits while staying true to our commitment to clean, honest care.
